Guge Kingdom Ruins 古格遗址

A major center for Buddhist learning in Tibet in the 9th century, and from where Buddhism was revived in Tibet. Despite its majesty, it is a relatively unknown site, and the difficulty in reaching it (8 hours along horrendous roads, but with mesmirising views) helps keep the tourists down. The few monastries, kept intact and well maintained by the Tibetans in charge, and the wonderfully vivid and bright Buddhist art particular to this region and found covering the walls of the monastries is well worth the effort needed to get here.
