Salta
By far the most happening city in the north of the country.
The nightlife pumps: a young population combined with a steady stream of travelers heading to/from Bolivia give the streets a lively feel lacking in many towns in the region.
Some wonderfully well-preserved colonial architecture.
Salta is the center for excursions to the subtroopical montane forests of Perque Nacional El Finca Rey, the polychrome desert canyons of El Toro and Cafayate, along with their vineyards, and the sterile but scenic salt lakes and volcnoes of the Andean highlands. -

Purmamarca
Beneath the polychrome Cerro de los Siete Colores, this tiny village's outstanding asset is its 17th-century Iglesia Santa Rosa de Lima.

Tilcara
pop 3,300. Rising above the Rio Grande valley, an isolated hill provides the site for the reconstructed pre-Colombian fortification of El Pucará...built from stone and one of the biggest in the region; basically a fortified town with restored houses adn an old church. Very little is known about the site, but it is quite large and there are teriffic views.

La Cumbrecita
Alpine-style village hidden in the forested hills. An excellent center for trekking and riding. No cars allowed.

Barreal
pop 1800 / elev 1650m
Barreal's divine location makes it one of the most beautifully situated towns you'll likely ever come across.
Views of the Cordillera de Ansilta--a stretch of the Andes with seven majestic peaks ranging from 5130m to 5885m--are simply astonishing.
Wandering along Barreal's back roads is an exercise in dreamy laziness.
