Apple Pan
George Motz writes, "The Apple Pan may serve the best burgers in America." Though he qualifies the may by admitting he doesn't play favorites. This West LA institution opened in 1947 and is the ultimate in early American burger nostalgia, with families, burger hounds and Hollywood celebs all competing for the limited counter space.
The Apple Pan serves only two burgers, both built from freshly ground quarter-pound patties. The Steakburger comes topped with pickles, mayo, iceberg and sweet relish, while the more popular Hickory Burger loses the relish in favor of barbecue sauce. Both come on a toasted, seedless bun and--in true SoCal fashion--wrapped in wax paper. In-N-Out Burger might be good, but The Apple Pan is better. -

Let's be frank
The dogs from this food cart run circles around most franks. No surprise, considering: They're made from grass-fed beef and humanely raised pork; homemade condiments are on the menul and one of the owners is the former meat forafer for Chez Panisses restaurant.
