Les primeres notícies del monestir daten del 1153, però no fou fins a l'any 1176 quan s’integrà plenament a l’orde del Cister. Es tracta de l’únic monestir. femení de la Ruta i l’únic que ha conservat ininterrompudament la comunitat durant més de 800 anys,
