Pertenece a la Comunidad de Murcia siendo esta la capital, ubicada propiamente en el centro hacia el este. Es interior, atravesado por el río Segura. Cuenta con un prestigioso monumento perteneciente al barroco, La Catedral de Murcia, muy importante a nivel histórico-cultural. Históricamente conocido por su huerta de ahí la fiesta regional del Bando de la Huerta, con sus típicos trajes de huertanos y huertanas.
