Wanaka

Wanaka (Won-a-ka) is a small town in Central Otago, South Island, New Zealand. It is situuated at the south-east end of Lake Wanaka, one of the deepest lakes in the Southern Hemisphere. It is surrounded by the mountains of the Southern Alps, specifically the Harris Ranges. Wanaka is a very popular international desination for winter sports with excellent snow-sports on a range of ski resorts. The Harris Ranges is known over th world as a superb place to heli-ski in as well and Wanaka is one of the bases for this activity (along with Queenstown which is about 60 minutes drive away). Summer sports are also a big draw-card with activities such as trout and salmon fishing, water-skiing, sailing, boating, climbing, walking, kayaking, etc. The normal population is around 4,000 but swells in the winter and summer tourist seasons.
