Tracks

This little bridge over a railyard in Queens is a special place for me. There's a walkway that has been built for pedestrians. After long days of teaching at the International High School down the street from here, I remember using the big rectangular windows to freeze-frame cityscapes with the sun setting behind. My own momentary paintings! The tracks below not only opened up the view to Lower Manhattan, but they also served as effective examples for the geometry curriculum that I co-taught for a couple of years with the math teacher, Persheen. By closing one eye and peering through these "windows" students could see what perspective looked like. These things all made this odd, little bridge special to me. What makes it unforgettable comes from the fact that it was through these windows that I first saw smoke burning out of one of the Trade Center Buildings on the morning of September 11, 2001.
